Be part of the change

Air France is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its activities on the ground and in flight on a daily basis.

Towards 2030

At Air France we have decided to step up our commitments and set a new objective for 2030 – to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% per passenger/km compared to 2005.

Our strategy is centred around four pillars. We integrate Corporate Social Responsibility in business and operation.

  • Offsetting of 100% of CO2 emissions on all domestic flights* as of January 1st, 2020;
  • Reduction in our CO2 emissions by 50% per passenger/km - a new objective for 2030;
  • Introduction of waste sorting on board Air France flights;
  • Investing in research for credible alternatives.

Offsetting all domestic flights

Air France has decided to offset 100% of CO2 emissions on all domestic flights in France. As of 1st of January, 2020, this compensation will take the form of participation in projects certified by recognized organizations. Business or leisure travelers, companies or employees of the Air France group will thus be able to travel throughout France with all flights offset (mainland France). Concretely, this represents on average over 450 flights per day and over 57,000 customers.

A modern fleet

The main lever for reducing our environmental footprint is our fleet modernization. A new phase in our fleet modernization strategy has started, thanks to the arrival of our very first A350. By 2025, Air France will have a total of 28 Airbus A350-900s in its fleet. This aircraft consumes 25% less fuel (i.e. 2.5 litres per passenger/100 km) thanks to the incorporation of material which are up to 67% lighter – 53% composites and 14% titanium. In addition, its noise footprint is reduced by 40%. And last, but not least, 25% less CO2 emissions.

REDUCING OUR WASTE AND RECYCLE

One of our priorities is to turn our waste into an opportunity. Our objective is to reduce the amount of waste we produce and recycle it, wherever possible, throughout our supply chain. Air France has already decided to eliminate the use of single-use plastic items (cups, cutlery, stirrers, etc.) on board its aircraft from the end of 2019, i.e. 1,300 fewer tonnes of plastic per year. We are also sorting our waste on board our flights to Paris. More than 7 million plastic bottles, 3 million cartons, and 6 million cans will gradually be sent to recycling facilities.

Innovative solutions for tomorrow

Reducing our environmental footprint also means innovating. This is why Air France is committed to research and innovation for credible alternatives. While we have already been involved in biofuel tests since 2014 with the "Lab line for the future" programme, we are now working alongside Bertrand Piccard's Solar Impulse Foundation to find economically and ecologically viable solutions for the future.
